Primary 1 (P1) registration will commence on 2 July 2024 for admission in 2025.
Two common questions i get as an agent are
How to measure the Home-School Distance (HSD)
The timeline in order to qualify for the priority under HSD
Hence, i put together this post with information from Ministry Of Education (MOE) website to help answer clients' queries.
Home-School Distance
Your home address is used to calculate the distance between your home and school, which can be a key consideration when choosing a school. The address used for Primary 1 (P1) registration should be the parents' official residential address as reflected on the NRICs. This address will be used to determine the Home-School Distance (HSD) category, where required for consideration of priority admission.
The HSD used will be the shortest distance from any point on the boundary around the school to the registrant’s official residential address.
Two ways to check whether the residential address is within 1 km to a particular school.
Method 1- Using OneMap
Using the school query, the map will show the areas within 1KM and 2KM of the school. This will help to you to focus your search on houses that are within the desirable distance of the schools. See the printscreen below
Method 2: Address query in MOE website
In the MOE website- use the postal code of your home or your shortlisted unit to check if the school you prefer is within 1 KM. See screenshot below.
Timeline in order to qualify for the HSD priority scheme
Priority is given to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who live closer to the preferred school when balloting. If your chosen primary school has more registrants than vacancies, balloting may be required. Priority admission will be given based on your child's citizenship and the Home-School Distance category. Singapore Citizens (SC) living within 1km of the school gets the 1st priority in the balloting.
The address used for registration is based on parents’ official residential address as reflected on their NRICs. There is no need to stay 30 months at the residential address before registration. If the child gains priority admission through home-school distance category, they must reside at the address used for registration (which shall continue to be your NRIC address) for at least 30 months from the start of the P1 Registration Exercise, which is 2 July 2024 for the 2024 P1 Registration Exercise. This means the family will have to stay until the end of Primary 2. Parents who move to a residence that is within the same home-school distance category as the declared address used for P1 registration can continue to fulfil the 30-month stay requirement based on the new address.
Please note you can register your child for P1 using the address of a yet-to-be-completed property that you have purchased. The vacant or delivery possession date of the new property you are moving into must be within 2 years of your child's entry into P1.
Hope the article is useful
